Day 1: Valette Reese

Today has been interesting! We started off by meeting our new friends from Abilene Christian University. We then were told the stipulations and rules to this experiment. When I first heard the dollar amount assigned to us I went into a panic. $21.60 to live off of for 5 days that was supposed to cover 3 square meals a day. I thought our College President had lost his mind. After hearing that this is the dollar amount that most people on WIC live off of I calmed down and began to fully understand why this project meant so much. When our team got together to discuss the meal options and how best to execute the only thing we agreed on without having to take a vote or explain ourselves was putting all of our money together to feed all 15 of us for the week. Our first meal was 2 pieces of chicken from a gas station located down the street from the college. This meal left everyone hungry and a tad bit irritated going into the activities for the afternoon which included working on the farm. So far this experience makes we want to go out and yell at the top of my lungs "WE NEED FOOD" the hoops and loops our team had to go through in order to go grocery shopping was unacceptable! If we had a simple grocery store in our community it would only enhance the lives and morale of those located in this area. Today has been a long day and I can only imagine what the rest of the week will look like. Until tomorrow.........
